Dr. Fernandez and the FP addressed a wide range of topics, among which the implementation of new study plans in #STEM areas, robotics and artificial intelligence stand out. STEM ( Science, technology, engineering, and math majors)
Likewise, new regulations were announced aimed at optimizing budget allocation, as well as improving the Ministry's operational, procurement and contracting processes, among others.
Bronx Community College / Workforce Development and Continuing Education Profesor Henry Grullon interjected and stated our major conern is language ( ESL - English As a Second Language) NOT STEM
The NYC DOE in general have failed and continued to fail our (English As a Second language) students.
The high school Profesor Henry addressed was (CIHS) Crotona INTERNATIONAL High School located near fordham rd and Crotona Avenue in one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York.
Professor Henry had the honor of co-teaching with some talented NYC DOE teachers.
Crotona International High School is part of several international high schools within the NYC DOE serving students from non-English countries.
In Crotona International High School, the largest immigrant students are from the Dominican Republic. On average, most arrive between one to three years. Professor Henry joined CIHS on 12/5/22 as part of a contract to substitute the 12th grade/Senior Global history class. His contract was from 12/5/22 to 2/17/23. After three weeks and Professor Henry the Principal Shweta Ratra renewed his contract until the end of the school year ( JUNE 23,2023). Professor Henry submitted a proposal to CIHS and coordinated a ESL program in collaboration of BCC ( Bronx Community College) / Workforce Development and Continuing Education and CIHS. It was a similar Pilot program proposal with the Dominican Republic Government and BCC a year ago.
Principal Ratra ONLY approved ESL instruction by Professor Henry in mid- May 2023 ( only 1 month of the school year left). Professor Henry developed ESL classes for the 11th Junior and 12th grade Senior classes.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of support. The classes were constantly interrupted due to cancellation by Administrators of CIHS, lack of class room’s available. The students and Professor Henry were frustrated by the lack of interest by CIHS Administrators for this very important pilot program.

What are STEM essential concepts?
STEM teaches and trains students to engage in critical thinking, inquiry, problem-solving, collaboration, and what is often referred to in engineering as “design thinking”. These stand out as skills that all students and workers will need to be successful in college, career, and life.
What are two reasons why STEM classes are important?
- Many teachers like STEM activities because they can interact more with students and see what they can do.

- Promotes Equality in Education.
Teaching STEM at a young age can help encourage more kids to pursue a career in STEM. ...

* Teaches Collaboration. ...
* Integrates Other Disciplines.
How do you diversify STEM education?
Create a STEM network. Connect with professionals working in STEM fields.
Reach out to them to ask if they would be willing to mentor students. Keep a pulse on any STEM-related events in your area that could be of interest to students.
